Why do I need an SSL certificate?

The SSL certificate ensures secure data transfer via HTTPS and confirms the reliability of the connection.

The SSL certificate encrypts the connection.

An SSL certificate allows you to use the HTTPS protocol for secure data transmission. It encrypts the information that is transmitted between the website and the user's computer. If the data protected by the certificate is intercepted, it will take at least a hundred years to decrypt it.

Browsers trust sites with SSL certificates

If there is no certificate or it is expired, the browser will recommend that you do not visit such a site. In order not to lose potential users, we recommend installing certificates from trusted certification authorities.

Sites with SSL certificates are higher in the search

Search engines also advocate for Internet security, so sites with SSL certificates have priority in search results. If the site does not have a certificate, it will be possible to find it in the search only for specific queries or much further than the first page.

SSL certificate inspires user trust

An OV or EV certificate will be issued to the site only after a thorough check by the company that owns the domain. Such certificates always indicate the name of the company, which is an indicator for the user that the site can be trusted.

What are SSL certificates?

SSL certificates vary in their levels of validation. When the site owner orders an SSL certificate, the authentication center verifies his data. Depending on the depth of verification, certificates are divided into three types.

1DV certificates
DV (Domain Validation) — certificates with a basic level of validation. The certification center checks whether the certificate requester has access to domain name management.
2OV certificates
OV (Organization Validation) is issued for domains owned by the organization. The certification center checks the information about the company on the website of the state registration authority and in the reference books, that is, it makes sure that such a company exists as a whole and the site really belongs to it. Such a certificate will indicate the legal name of the company.
3EV certificates
EV certificates (Extended Validation) with extended verification indicate the highest reliability of the site. EV validation takes about 10 days and includes manual verification of the company's information and contact details. After verification, the contacts are added to the site's certificate. This information will be visible to all site visitors if you open the certificate details.

And if there are several domains. Does everyone need a certificate?

Yes, but there are ways to save money. Here they are:

1Wildcard certificates for protecting subdomains
Wildcard certificates protect the primary domain and its range of subdomains specified during the order. For example, you can protect domains with a single certificate. example.com , mail.example and sale.example by specifying *.example.com . This will protect all subdomains of the site (i.e. mail.example.com But not my.mail.example.com . To protect such domains, you will already need a range of *.mail.example.com ).
2SAN Multi-domain certificates
A single multi-domain SAN certificate protects several different domain names, for example primer.ru , example.com , or subdomains of various levels: mail.example.com and my.mail.example.com . The full list of values is specified when ordering the SAN certificate.
3SAN Wildcard Certificates
With a single SAN Wildcard certificate, you can protect multiple domains with different ranges at once. This certificate can protect, for example, websites*.primer.ru , *.mail.example.com and *.site.net
